Re: The alternative Delphi roadmap to success

Ingvar,

After they got all the big cash from this now again happy
customer base

Hm.. You take things for granted.
One has to watch out for the "Kylix effect". Thousands of developers
shouting "me too", and when the product finally hits the street, the
customers are.. where? Where?

There is a big difference to note here:

Moving to Linux is moving to another world.
Moving to .NET is moving to another world.

Moving to Win64 is a natural upgrade path, without your environment
changing much.

In the long run, it's not sure if the only future of development will
be .NET. It's not sure if there is any future for Linux on the
Desktop at all (keep in mind that therefore I've NOT including Linux
as a Desktop target in my roadmap).

But it's 100% sure that in a few years each and every Windows user
in the world will have a 64Bit CPU in his computer and a while
after that will be running a 64Bit version of Windows.

And then think about how easy it will be for Delphi users to make
that move and claim "64Bit" for their applications.

This could easily mean the highest market share for Delphi ever
in the native code market (which may one day shrink due to
..NET, but will never go away - for many kinds of applications
'this runs faster and feels faster than our competitors product'
will always work.

Therefore, the risk of the "Kylix effect" will be much lower
here. And, obviously, the investments needed by Borland
to go Win64 also are much much smaller than with Kylix.

But overall, your analysis has to be a very good starting point for
some real thinking, hopefully for DevCo too.

That's what it's meant for, yes.

Simon
