IMO, the opportunity cost of the .NET development has been too

Ths is where diagnosing the past gets tricky. Why say the cost is
too high, rather than saying the effort was underfunded? (DTG is
hiring)
Some folk might reasonably assess that the cost of producing
a genuinely competitive commercial .NET IDE /at all/ is
impossibly high for any company not called Microsoft.
Which might (eventually) lead to a strategy of fighting them where they
are weak, not where they are strong ;-)
