Re: And now what?

Hmm, many others on this NG have expressed their own reasons for a lack of
interest in upgrading and some considerable discontent over quality and
product features seems to top the list.

And, the quality is improving. But, that can still depend on the computer
that you are using and the third-party components and IDE plugins.

You may have noticed that many just don't want a Win32 IDE that requires
.NET and J# runtime to support some of it's desirable features.

Yes, I did notice that. But personally, I don't mind, because we already
use an off-the-shelf .Net application for our project management and that we
are going to start developing for .Net. And, I can see why someone that
only develops for Win32, that they don't want any .Net stuff in the BDS.
But, if the features are easier and less time consuming to implement using
..Net, then by doing proceding that way would mean that more features and bug
fixes can be dealt with.

But, having to support Vista in the near future, might be one reason(but
probably not the only one) to upgrade to Delphi for Vista, once it is
released.

Just what specific features do you want and expect to be added in the
Win32 version of Delphi for Vista ? As for it being compelling, I rather
doubt it since one can already add Vista eye candy using the current
Delphi Win32 versions.

I'm not talking about using third-party code. Delphi is supposed to be a
RAD environment, then why would I need to add code to use the eye candy that
is available in the OS. As an example, the MessageDlg function should be
able to detect if the OS is Vista or a prior version, and display the dialog
according. If you look back to Delphi 5, Delphi 5 only used the Win95 Open
dialog style, unless you used a third-party component. And, that changed in
a later version where the Win2000 style as accessible automatically
depending on which OS the application was running. The same thing goes for
Vista, there's yet another kind of Open dialog that is available.

And, I don't know if subscription based pricing would help some current
customers upgrade, and even attract new customers.

A successful subscription business model implementation requires a lot of
trust on the part of customers.

One model would see a limitation of available functions after the expiration
date passes. That's what we do for our software. But, come to think of it,
it might not necessarily work for an IDE. But, then again, it might (i.e.:
disable third-party IDE plugins, block the possibility to add components to
the palette, maybe disable the ability to save projects via the IDE, just to
name a few) The users that would opt for the subscription model would have
to be clearly made aware of what happens if they don't renew, we do that by
showing them a reminder(nag screen) for the renewal starting 30 days before
and showing the consequences of not renewing.
