This is a HUGE drawback for me. My apps end up on several thousand
desktops. Requiring them all to download and install the correct version
of .net (itself a big download) is asking for a real tech support
headache. Maybe 5 years from now after vista is established it wont be
such a big deal, but for right now .net for my apps is simply out of the
question.
This is the main reason I'm reluctant to market a small .NET app to the
general public. However, 5 years is a little pessimistic. If you have a
webserver look at your weblogs to see how many of your visitors already have
it installed - it shows in the IE browser signature. Also 20Mb is getting
smaller and smaller every day. Heck, even I downloaded a 145Mb video the
other day just to watch the Borland version of the Simpsons ;-)
The other side of the coin is that once they have the framework installed
your exes can be miniscule. For example, the *complete* executable code for
the lightweight .NET IDE that I'm currently working on for use with the GPCP
for .NET compiler (screenshot at: http://cfbsoftware.com/images/cpide.gif )
is a whopping 70Kb (yes, that's right, Kb not Mb)
