respects it's similar to Windows XP in performance. I have a 1.8GHz
iMac G5 sitting next to a WinXP machine with a 1.8GHz Athlon in it,
so the speed of both machines should be similar. Impressions during
use are as follows:
The Mac starts up into a usable state rather more quickly than XP, but
that's probably due to various third-party bits and bobs such as AV
software that (currently) aren't necessary on OS X.
Windows XP has a "snappier" UI.
Multitasking is smoother on the Mac when more than one program is
simultaneously accessing the file system on a single disk.
Windows XP requires less RAM than OS X (10.4) to work well. Apple
traditionally supply far too little RAM as standard, and this tends to
give people the impression that the OS is far slower than is really
the case.
File searches using Spotlight are massively faster than XP's Search,
but Spotlight has less options.
Both seem equally reliable in general usage, although OS X is more
sensitive to hardware issues such as memory sticks with mismatched
latencies (Linux is also more sensitive than Windows in this regard).
I've not had either of them crash on me in general usage, but
Windows has previously had problems with buggy drivers, while the
Mac did strange things when it was new due to a bad memory stick
(which was immediately replaced by the dealer).
