It was the first Mac Mini based on the PowerPC. I haven't tried the new
Intel based Mac's.

Aha, here is your problem then! The PowerPC Mac mini was severely
underpowered. The Intel Mac's run rings around the ols PowerPC ones. Added
bonus - you can still run Windows should you wish to!
