Re: Do you develop in a Virtual Machine ?

if so, is it fast enough?

Yes, and mostly. I use Virtual Server, unlike most who use VMWare.

My biggest disappointment is video speed. I never realized how many times D6 repainted windows until I started developing in a VM.

Part of that problem is that I'm using Windows Server 2003 as my host OS. The only supported drivers for my video card are the ones packaged with the OS. None of the other drivers, including the OEM drivers, will install in Windows Server 2003.

Another part of the problem, IMO, is the video/driver implemented in Virtual Server 2003.

How much RAM do people use with a VM,

My host has 1.5GB. My VMs vary depending on their use. My D6 development VM (main one used) has 384. My BDS 2006 VM has 768. ;)

and what processor speed?

1.8Ghz P4 Mobile

we would also need SQL Server installed in theVM,

Due to the demands that SQL Server places on the disk subsystem, and that I don't have enough disks (on my laptop) to dedicate a physicial disk to a VM, I haven't installed SQL Server in a VM.

I have SQL Server installed on my host. But this gives me other advantages. I actually have a virtual network consisting of about 8 virtual machines. These are all on my own domain, where my host (Windows Server 2003) is the domain controller. All of my VMs can see the same instance of SQL Server and can share databases.

Sure, I could see SQL Server if it was on a VM. But again, due to the disk demand, I chose not to.
