I think we've had enough discussion.
And that's where I wish this would have ended.
Technically John already lost his first bets. I was nice enough
to call it a wash. According to Gambler's Anonymous, someone who
feels the need to bet big after a loss definitely has a gambling
problem. :)
One set of bets were that the sale would not happen before the end of the
year. I'm not sure how a sale has occurred without any of us knowing about
it, especially blogger extraordinaire Allen Bauer, who appears to be under
the much-shared impression that Borland has decided to not sell the IDE's at
this time, but I'm willing to hear you out.
One of the betters looked diligently into how to pay-off on the bet, but the
logistics of getting a case of guinness to me in Wisconsin, from someone
that lives outside the United States, appeared to be daunting, so we agreed
in the end to buy each other a round of drinks at the next developers'
conference. That way we both win.
My only fear with that resolution of the bet is that it may take a year or
so for CodeGear to get back to the point where they decide a conference is a
good economic move.
Personally, I think this whole thread should go to off-topic.
Well, I can definitely understand why you dislike the topic. Nobody likes to
see someone with as little knowledge about economics as I possess betting
that 20% of their colleagues will have to find other jobs by July. And I
can't help but feel sympathetic towards Peter Morris' comment on the
insensitivity of it all.
Why not sweeten things by getting in on the fun? If I win, we both have to
buy each other a round of drinks at the next CodeGear conference. If you
win, we both have to buy each other a round of drinks at the next CodeGear
conference.
