But usually when people refer to "trade deficit" they are referring to the
merchandise trade deficit, often unwittingly. The public as a whole seems to
be confused on this matter though and think it means a flow of money outside
of the country, which they also confuse with real value.

The silliness of the common misunderstanding of trade deficits is easy to
show. If you had a 100% trade deficit, in other words EVERYTHING that the
country consumed was imported and the country sold no goods to the rest of
the world, then you have a country that is getting all of it's stuff for
free.
