Personally, I think FP still has to mature a bit before that will be worthwhile.

From this I gather you don't actually use Free Pascal. FPC is unbelievable and has features Delphi developers had on their wishlist for years. It already support Generics, 64bit CPUs, 15 platforms, built-in memory leak detection, etc.. Multi-Core enhancements are also on the roadmap. The Free Pascal compiler is top grade! Lazarus (GUI IDE) is still lagging behind, but the development pace is something Borland/CodeGear can only dream of.

I use both Free Pascal and Lazarus in a commercial environment for a year now and have no problems at all!

Free Pascal runs well. Lazarus, well it is a real bug master on Ubuntu/Kubuntu and Suse Linux. Not unusual to crash the IDE just by trying simple Drag and Drop operations.

Although this is a Delphi forum, try using Java 6 and doing some GUI development with it on Linux/Unix/Windows. Java 6 flies, no joke. Near native speed now.

I hope Code Gear partners with the Free Pascal folks myself. They have a true XPlatform compiler, and Borland has a real IDE.
