Re: Is there any hope for Microsoft ?

David,

IMO, COM and all it's variants (ActiveX, DCOM, COM+) are not "dead".

But they should be.

for some reason, i often hear this from people that apparently never made the effort to learn and comprehend how COM works. COM is a complex technology, and successfully working with it implies one need to fully understand how it works.

True, I never made the effort to fully learn COM, but in this case, I don't consider that to be a fault in me, but rather in the technology. It simply *is* overly complex technology and I never wanted to learn any more about than I already know.

When you have a large project with lots of people with different technology experience and different tools (VB, Delphi), it's just too much effort try to teach those people all the needed concepts of COM.

There are smarter people than me who have criticized COM (you probably know the famous funny one concerning COM and smoking) and I have to fully agree with them. And I think that MS would also agree with many of these assessments. Many of their former technologies have been simplified for NET (e.g. ADO) and that is very good thing. For everyone.

But i suppose history has shown that it's human nature to vilify what one doesn't understand...

It obviously is in human nature to make patronizing comments like this when you think that once again you had it right.
