IMO, COM and all it's variants (ActiveX, DCOM, COM+) are not "dead".

But they should be.

for some reason, i often hear this from people that apparently never made the effort to learn and comprehend how COM works. COM is a complex technology, and successfully working with it implies one need to fully understand how it works.

But i suppose history has shown that it's human nature to vilify what one doesn't understand...
