The encryption comment had me chuckling too :)

Swedish, Danish, Norwegian are related and generaly understandable
across the borders. Icelandic is related to Norwegian/Danish - but
broke away several hundred years ago - so not that easily
understandable without training.

Finnish is a completely different language group. The vocabulary and
grammar differences between Swedish and Finnish are enormous. It's
almost like comparing English and Zwahili :)
