For both(newsgroup and
webforum) you need to find the right server, you need to have a
login ready to do something useful(i.e. posting not just
reading)

No, only for NNTP news groups. Look here:
http://forum.cakewalk.com/tt.asp?forumid=5

If there's a way to post a reply to one of the threads there without
creating an account and logging in, I sure as heck can't find it.

Click the link "Register" and there you go.

Please pardon me in advance for yelling, but this is the third time in
as many messages that Ralf or I have said this:

WITHOUT LOGGING IN.

I can't post to that forum without creating a new account, submitting
a valid email address, and logging in. By contrast, if I click on a
link to a newsgroup in any default install of a recent version of
Windows, OE pops up and I can immediately see messages and post to the
group without having to fill out a single bit of personal info.
Software installation isn't required because the software already
exists. If I for some reason had chosen not to install it at the outset
then I can put it on by ticking a checkbox in control panel. There are
no wizards to complete, no setup applications, nothing.

OE is lacking in many respects, but it's hard to beat for availability
and simplicity of going to a newsgroup for the first time.

It kind of baffles me, actually, that nobody seems to have built a
really functional web forum.

I am outta here, a new project just emerged, need to program <G>

:)
