You guys should take a look at XNA Game Studio Express from Microsoft:

Benefits:
1. It's free
2. If you pay the small fee for XNA Creators Club you can even publish to the XBox 360.
3. It's .Net so you'll get a modern language and framework to develop in and at the same time learn something new.
