Hi Andrew,
Yes, raw gut-wrenching speed is not my concern. I am not going to be doing high end development, and the game we want to emulate ran on my Pentium75, so if we can't do it on modern hardare then we truely have done something very wrong!
My mauin concern is making it possible for the highest number of people to contribute. (5% speed increase is no good if game is never made).
I figure getting people to contribute comes down to the following
1) Interest : pick the right project.
2) Low cost : ie. free.
3) Leveraging current skills : language(s).
4) Ease of involvement : Make it easy to pick a small part to do at first, so it is not to daunting to get involved
