just my IMHO:

Best thing that could happen, IMHO, is to take the basics of the Kylix GUI and utilize Free Pascal for the compilation work, which ties to GTK, which runs on Windows, Linux, Mac and many embedded devices.

Free Pascal works and works well. The Lazarus IDE is unstable, but not Free Pascal.

I would personally like to see Code Gear move in this direction. It would mean that Code Gear could focus on making a superb IDE, and leverage off the work of Free Pascal and aid in the Free Pascal development effort, by committing resources to the Free Pascal project, helping to make both better.

However, Code Gear MUST avoid the mistakes of the past with Kylix, and make sure that the IDE is REASONABLY priced. A $ 999.00 price will mean that it will never reach mass appeal.

Personally I think $ 99.00 would be a good starting point. To keep residual income flowing from its life, use the MyEclipse model of subscription. $ 99.00 dollar per year.

This means profits would be low for the inception of the product, and expectation on ROI must reflect this. CodeGear must understand that this is a long range ROI, not something that they should see as a ROI that will return investment costs as returning in a year or even two. It may be a three to four year ROI.

However costs can be reduced by tying in to the Open Source backend, That is where Borland can leverage the talents of the OE world, and have a product that is immediately available for Windows, Linux, and Apple OSes, as well as some embedded devices.
