Wrong question. The right question is: How many people use FPC
at work. This is probably a number with four digits.
I suppose you don't think that's what you
call a *big* number, right?
Depends. We went into the 32-bit era with nothing. No
developers, no code. For 64-bit transition, we are better
prepared than anyone could have dreamed. The compiler has
become one of the most advanced open source compilers, and we
have the most advanced open source RAD tool. We support Linux,
Windows, Mac OS, 32-bit, 64-bit, at the programmers service.
It is no problem that the business user count is, in your opinion,
low. Back then it was zero.
Many Delphi users are currently crossing our path. The amount
of users is increasing quickly. We suddenly meet people who
start to contribute code. There is no doubt that the forces
are at work as during the 32-bit transition.
It is true we should not expect all Delphi users to migrate to Free
Pascal. That is exactly the problem: Free Pascal will get stronger,
but Pascal will get weaker. The way out is that Codegear restore
the market appeal of Delphi. Which is what this thread is about,
after all.
installation. After that no 32-bit systems will be
distributed anymore.
So? My 32 bit computers will still run fine, I believe :-)
Yes, but in that case, your next one, which you apparently do
not plan to buy soon, will have more than 4GB of memory. I'm
sure you don't want to waste that memory. It is hard to sell a
machine with 8GB RAM with a 32-bit operating system today. It'll
be hard to sell such a desktop with 32-bit operating system
tomorrow.
This is normal. Servers will be first, because they need more
memory.
Yeah right. I can see who needs more memory here:
http://www.it-analysis.com/content.php?articleid=12768&
Nobody I know.
At this time:
* Scientists
* Database users
* Industrial designers
In the near future, except the following groups to need the memory:
* Gamers
* Multimedia content creators
Business desktops will need it last, that'll take a few more years.
When desktops need the memory, they will move to
64-bit. Expect this in 2-3 years.
Keyword is "when". You say 2-3 years. I doubt it. Most desktops do run
Office, Outlook and probably some proprietary apps to do their
business. Millions of folks who will be happy with 1GB (hell, even
512MB) for the next 10 years.
Outlook won't be a factor in the transition. It will follow.
Photoshop is, as is the next generation of games.
:) Do not underestimate Moore's law.
And why would I need Vista, please? Just for the new gizmos MS planted
there? I had it installed for about a month, it looked nice and that's
all about. I'm not gonna shell out 400$ just to show my friends nicer
backgrounds. Not even 100$ before SP2.
Why do you need XP? 2000 works fine? Why do you need 2000? NT works
fine. Yes they do. Yet the world will run Vista within some time.
You'd better be able to develop applications for it.
I keep hearing that for the past ... what 5? 10 years?
No, you heard "Linux will take over the world this year". This hasn't
happened and will not happen in the near future. But Linux is here,
and it is big business. If you are serious about your job,
you cannot ignore that.
or Linux. To hell with the question which one sucks (I think
it is Windows). One needs to do both.
Be my guest.
At your service: Professional Pascal development tool for:
* Win32
* Win64
* Linux/i386
* Linux/x86_64
* Linux/PowerPC32
* Linux/PowerPC64
* Linux/ARM

year 2020. In 2020, 64-bit systems will still be able to
Can't argue with Moore's law, can I :-)
You got the point.
