I'm not sure there is enough there to be better than just using Eclipse
or Netbeans.
The last Delphi version of the IDE was pretty stable, Using the Winelibs
for the IDE is not unacceptable to the Linux community as some may
think. Wine is an intregal part of the Open Source community and they
are getting better in implementing the Win32 APIs with each new release.
I agree.
What FPC does not have, is a good IDE. The Lazarus IDE is extremely
unstable. It is a good start, but has a long way to go.
ISTM Lazarus is holding FPC back from bigger/better things. Building a
modern IDE is a tough thing to do. Good open source/pluggable IDE's
already exist so the reasons for building one's own IDE is that much
harder to justify.
Although I am primarily a Java programmer ( I do use C++ on occasion), I
would be the first in line to buy a subscription based stable Delphi
XPlatform edition, that either used FPC, or provided the current
XPlatform capabilities that FPC provides. FPC is extremely promising for
native RAD Linux and Mac development, not to mention PDAs.
At a reasonable price point, I would think they would have a winner
there. Good stuff all around Paul.
OT: you mentioned recent performance measurements of Java 6 and .NET in
another thread. Do you have any public references? We can discuss this
offline if you'd like. I'd like to get your thoughts about JBuilder
2007 as well.
