I'd just use Open Office or Google Docs.
Well yeah, but not every app I use has it's "Open" counterpart, I
suppose.
Do you prefer to purchase components
with royalty fees?
Full sources, that's my first wish. So I can fix the bugs myself. And
yes, I'd pay royalty fees if they are reasonable and if the product
comes cheaper in this context. Take TeeChart, DevEx, Report Builder,
etc. As a garage developer I don't make a lot of money with stuff I
code at home. I would love to get these products for smaller price,
full code so I can have them on my resume and help me find better jobs.
Why full code if I use them at home? Still because if they crashes I
don't want to wait for the developer to fix it. Sometime, they might
not even fix it if it happens only in my app. If I write an application
myself and sell it, yes I would gladly pay royalty fees. If I don't ...
than at least I paid less for the product. If you get more people to
use your product, in the end, you sell more of it. If developers can't
afford to buy 3rd party tools and only wait for their companies to buy
those for them, I would think the 3rd party tools world would be a lot
smaller.
My point being if the price was just 100$ you'd have one by now.
I don't see how this fantasy is relevant.
Well, you enumerated the reasons for owning a plasma TV now. But omited
a very important item, the price.
I would say that the customer shouldn't upgrade if they aren't getting
the attention they want from the supplier.
But the customer really thinks he/she's getting all the attention or
worse, they have no choice.
using Task Manager.
Why? All applications have bugs/problems.
Sure, but not all of them end-up killed with Task Manager on an hourly
basis.
I'm not sure how paying per use/click vs. purchasing software would
prevent bugs?
When you buy bad software most of the time you end up owning bad
software. However, if I pay per click and have to choose among several
providers, which one of them do you think will make more money? I am
sure it's not those apps that crashes frequently.
IMO, companies typically don't "hold back innovation" in that way.
They may have mis-managed priorities, but they can't slow progress or
innovation.
They can do both. Especially those that own a niche market and where
competition is not so fierce.
They can't manage progress because the competition is too fierce in
IT.
Yeah, generally speaking, yes. Open source does not cover all areas of
IT. There are plenty not being opensourced. When a new company takes
over into some area it all starts nice for the end-user. But it doesn't
last long. The user gets boxed in a corner soon after competition is
swalowed.
software space, it's really almost impossible to do that IMO.
We have different experiences. Obviously we disagree.
