Not even for desktop software. If I upgrade to Vista, I expect to be able
to install all the applications that I paid for and that worked fine on
XP,

Does that also include the Win9x applications that you paid for and expected
to work on XP?

Does that also include the Win3x applications that you paid for and expected
to work on Win9x?

Does that include .. etc. etc.

Do you still support and maintain software that you originally developed for
Win3x?

and see them work equally well (notwithstanding special-case compatibility
issues, which ought to be rare). But now if I reinstall those apps I
already own (and, in many cases, don't wish to pay for upgrade), I will be
locked out of Help.

If you upgrade to Vista that will be the least of your problems - at least
you can download the Help engine. What about the old hardware that you have
that still works fine on XP but doesn't have a Vista driver?
