Oh, come on. It's one thing to cross platforms (16-bit to 32) or a span of
10 years or more. It's another thing to expect that last year's edition of
a program will work on this year's operating system, especially that Vista
that is merely XP tweaked for visuals and DRM.

Does that include .. etc. etc.

Do you still support and maintain software that you originally developed for
Win3x?

I don't, but there are shareware apps written in Delphi that keep
supporting 16-bit Windows. Apparently they're still generating revenue
(yes, it surprises me too.) Total Commander is one - a hugely popular piece
of shareware. Out of curiosity I've just downloaded the 16-bit package: the
files in it are dated 2007-01-01.

and see them work equally well (notwithstanding special-case compatibility
issues, which ought to be rare). But now if I reinstall those apps I
already own (and, in many cases, don't wish to pay for upgrade), I will be
locked out of Help.

If you upgrade to Vista that will be the least of your problems - at least
you can download the Help engine. What about the old hardware that you have
that still works fine on XP but doesn't have a Vista driver?

Naturally, but drivers are understandably one of the "special cases" I
mentioned. For one thing, it takes two parties to get a driver working and
certified. It's not like winhelp.exe no longer runs on Vista! MS just made
an arbitrary decision to yank it, thus inconveniencing many users and ISVs
alike.
