David, you might want to give PerForce a try and add that to your
timings comparision. We had very slow performance with ClearCase at
our company and the switch to PerForce made everything we did in
Clearcase seem like a turtle.
It's certainly worth considering.
The frustrating thing I'm finding is that this abysmal performance
isn't consistent. Often it is that slow, but it is also sometimes a lot
more performant. I'm currently testing a theory that the first
operation performed after the laptop has booted up is slow, and
subsequent operations are noticibly faster.
And I've now switched from my WiFi connection to a 100Mbps wired
network connection so I can rule out wireless latency. I'll sit on it
for a bit longer for making any rash decisions.
I'm also mindful that perhaps the way I'm using TortoiseSVN isn't the
way that SVN was designed to work.
I know that TortoiseSVN gives notification of changes to working files
via little icons overlaid the Explorer icons, but drilling down to the
relevant folder (or folders) can get quite tedious. So what I generally
do is perform a 'check for modifications' or 'SVN Commit' operation on
my working copys root folder and proceed from there. Does this seem
like an unreasonable way to work with SVN?
