Hi
I have seen howls of protest over the choice of the name "Delphi for PHP"
for Codegear's new PHP offering.
The protests have good reason to exist. Delphi for PHP don't make much sense to long
time Delphi users.... what to expect from new ones?
I thought I'd write up my thoughts on why I think its a good idea.
The good idea is the release of another IDE for PHP. I always defended that Borland
and now CG must continue to develop languages and IDE. Having a PHP language in CG
asset is a very, very good start!
What strikes me as immediately obvious is the leveraging of Codegear's most
popular product into a BRAND. This is a very good idea. Delphi even now
has connotations of quality, excellence and elegant design despite its
problems with recent product releases.
Well, I do not agree 100%. At least in my country, tons of VB developers can't stand
the name "delphi". Ok. You can call them children, but I hope some of them join CG
even if they think that Delphi for PHP is a Delphi IDE for a Pascal Hyperlink Page :-D
Now this is confusing to some, because in recent year's Borland changed the
name of its version of Object Pascal to "Delphi" to match the name of the
IDE product in which it was housed. This of couse was at the same time that
the company was forming plans to introduce multiple language personalities
in the same IDE...
To some?! I guess everyone is confused. And still are! And we are followers of
"Delphi" community. What can we expect from newcomers?
They could name it after a lot of things.. Galileo for PHP, Andromeda for PHP, ISIS
for PHP even DINDE for PHP ( Delphi Is Not Delphi for PHP)
I'm giving credit to CG because I do believe they had pretty good reasons to name it
like they did. And sure hope they get more than the Delphi for Win32 community user
group.
Clément
