Yes, the documentation sucks, but I am not so impressed with the
software either.
Having exactly Delphi and PHP as my two main developer platforms,
Delphi for PHP sounded at first as a something sent from heaven. I am
not so sure after having played with it for a couple of days.
My main critique is that the output from it does not at all look like
websites. It looks more like normal Windows apps. I have really
difficulties imaging how apps built with D4P could be implemented in
full fledged websites, having the look and feel as a website.
How would you make a normal three-column layout for example? What
about a header and a footer? What happens if you actually incorporates
such things in a D4P project? Will it still open in the IDE, will it
compile? Can you still debug?
I think this tool could be great for some specialized, dedicated
*applications*, for example reporting tools for intranets etc. where
the look and feel does not have to be weblike. But for a real website,
a commercial website?
Well, it's new to all of us, maybe it is not at all difficult to do
what I have sketched here, I just right now really can't see how.
The IDE itself is OK, but the debugger is barely usable. As far I as
can see, you have no way to change the content of PHP variables for
example, there is no tooltips showing the variables (you must look in
the local/global variable panes) and in many cases it is simply not
possible to determine the value of the components. I put up a simple
test app, tried to debug and realized that there was not way to see
the content of the edit fields. I guess it is a bug, but then a very
annoying one.
I have not given up D4P - maybe I will change my mind after trying it
a bit more.
Regards,
Martin
