Using a source control system such as Subversion, one does not need to be afraid to save too often: you can always fetch back the stable version from the local repository...
If anything, I have this "bug" of not liking to see unsaved files! A looong many years ago, after loosing some work to a power failure, I got so used to spam CTRL-S that, even though I haven't used but notebooks for quite some years and always plugged in to a power outlet, meaning that I have a "fallback" power supply, aka: battery, I still keep spamming CTRL-S whenever I change a couple lines... But I agree on the auto-save feature or, at least, something à-la-Word: do some temp autosaves every x minutes and if loading the editor and the temp file was there, ask about what to do with it(/them)...
