West Palm Beach is part of the Florida coast that includes a large metropolitan area encompassing Fort Lauderdale and Miami. Miami-Dade, Broward and Palm Beach counties combined have over 4.6 million people. While West Palm Beach has a population of less than 90,000, Palm Beach county in which it is located has a population of 1.2 million. It also has a significantly higher per capita income than the state average.
Its far from a "hick town" as you call it.
