I find it curious how some companies persist in using product activation
given the obvious dislike customers (and potential customers) have for it.
I am pretty sure it's effectiveness at piracy prevention is imaginary, but
there's a certain type of tightwad, control-freak, penny-pincher who likes
to try to keep as tight a rein on things as they can, come hell or high
water.
