Re: Software Activation Still a Bad Idea

But to say that CG should be glad just to see Delphi being used whether it
was legitimately or illegally is simply ridiculous.

I dont know if its _completely_ rediculous. I'm pretty convinced one of the
reasons MS-Word became the standard word processor, despite better offerings
from other companies at the time, was that Word 2.0, when zipped up, fit
_exactly_ on one 1.44 meg floppy. Coincidence? I doubt it. Virtually
everyone I knew at the time had a copy. (except me, I used Ami Pro :-P)

The size of the market obviously helps. Even CodeGear/Borland recognizes
this with their free versions, which basically are there to fill the role
that easily pirated software would fill. The only problem with the free
turbo versions is that because you cant install new components into them,
they do nothing to assist the growth of the 3rd party component market,
who's heath is vitally important to Delphi's health.

I'm not saying its a GOOD thing to go and hand off copies of delphi to your
friends, just that there's pressures from that which push in both directions
when it comes to long term sales for a company. Basically, if CodeGear
could have every VS user instead using a pirated copy of Delphi, it would in
the long run be good for CodeGear. Their bottom line doesnt change (same
number of sales after all is said and done, as these are just additional
users), but a certain percentage of those people will end up buying a
legitimate licence, and Delphi itself would be a better known, more accepted
standard.
