Re: Windows Server 2008 to be the last 32 bit OS

"Future extensions to the Windows Server product line will also be
64-bit only apparently, including the new medium-sized business edition
coming early next year, code-named "Centro," and its small business
edition "Cougar" later in 2008. Currently the roadmap shows the R2
edition of WS2K8 showing up in 2009."

IMO, this increases the urgency of the 64bit Delphi Compiler quite
substantially.

That some features will only be available with the 64bit versions
of the Windows Server OS doesn't directly indicate if Win32 binaries
will or will not be able to take advantage of them.

This was true with the 16bit to 32bit transition because there was a method (thunking) to use any 32bit dlls from 16bit and vice versa. In the new and brave world of 64bit there is no such technick implemented (yet perhapse) and since the 32bit programs are runing inside an isolated environment from the rest of the 64bit system it might be prooven an impossible task. It has been stated from various sources (MS and non) that there will be no way to use a 64bit dll from a 32bit program or a 32bit dll from a 64bit program and that there are no plans to implement it.

This tells me that the pains of using iinterop between the two worlds will be extremelly high and probably higher than a complete rewrite in a new environment. I aggree with the previous poster. I see that the limit of a 64bit release is comming closer and closer. Soon I might be forced to investigate the other solutions out there and what it takes to support our software in those environments. For sure at first will be small and mostly new projects but if i start walking down that root I might end up in a different vendor.
