Correction, the maximum address space for a 32 bit CPU based pc is
four (4) gigabytes.
Due to inefficiency of windows, only a maximum of 3.5gb is usable.
To be able to use this maximum you have to do some tweaking though.
Currently we buy machines with 1 or 2 gigabytes RAM. Therefore
the switch will start in one itertation of Moore's law, about
18 months from now. At Christmas 2009, I predict most desktop
PC's will be equiped with a 64-bit OS.
I doubt this highly.
The next to be released windows server OS will be the last 32 bit one
has Microsoft announced.
Since this os is not to be expected before 2008, and the normal
replacement cycle is 3 to 5 years, i don't expect any major shifts
before 2012.
This is server side only. No announcements where made by MS about the
desktop version.
I also think with the quick rise of multi core CPU that the emphasis of
the next release will be much more on multi core support rather than 64
bit support.
Both would be ideal of course but i see multi-core support as much more
important than 64 bit at this moment in time.
The major shift to 64 bit on the destkop will only come when microsoft
stops making 32 bit os's altogether.
And even then millions will still be using 32 bit os's 10 years after
ms has stopped making them.
