Tiburon sounds very interesting, but as for Highlander, I fear it will be
too little, too late. I really think CodeGear would do best to concentrate
on Win32 and the dynamic languages like PHP, Ruby, etc. When it comes to
..NET, playing follow the leader is not a winning strategy, IMHO, and those
resources would be better used elsewhere. .NET is not the juggernaut MSFT
thought it would be, and those programmers that have committed themselves to
it are already using C#. Plus, nobody is going to try Highlander with its
crippled generics when they can get full generics support in the much less
expensive Visual Studio, unless they are already Delphi fans that are
already committed to a large Delphi codebase. You can't milk that cow
forever, especially when that cow wonders where the rest of the herd went.
I think it is indeed important to consider the needs of existing customers,
after all, nobody likes being left out to dry and even those not using it
will take note of the way CodeGear treats it's existing Delphi for .NET
customers. But at some point it is necessary to be realistic about one's
resources and market position. Turn it into a plug-in to VS to support
legacy code.
