Actually it's usually because there is NO selection performed at all. A
sample that is chosen specifically to be a representatively random
sample by definition isn't random.

When I said selected with great care, I didn't mean that they
hand-picked each person directly. However they might have been picked
randomly from a subpopulation which was selected with great care (ie
stratified sampling, see
http://www.nizkor.org/features/fallacies/biased-sample.html ).

Note that an online vote is NOT a random sample, as it excludes the
subpopulation who have either no internet access or are otherwise
unable/unaware to participate. And since that subpopulation is
excluded entirely, it's impossible to correct for any bias.

Not one of them - not even me - has voted for 64-bit support in QC. So
is QC over-emphasising demand for 64-bit or UNDERstating it?

Your story only highlights the problem, without a proper survey we
have no way of knowing.

It's CodeGears job - if they wish to succeed - to anticipate that and
lead those customers to where CodeGear knows they need to be, even if
they do not as yet know it themselves.

Certainly. However do realise that their decisions are based on a
wealth of data you do not have, and that they have priorities which
might not align with yours.

To take UniCode and .net on the other hand..... the two things that seem
to be pushing 64-bit to the end of the CodeGear rainbow.... these
things are both here. Now. If customers want them, they will be doing
something about it NOW, or more likely will have done something about it
already. CodeGear doing something in the future, even in the near
future, won't actually do much to win those customers or change their
established courses.

I can agree that the features are late, however I attribute this to
the last couple of years at Borland. While that doesn't help those who
need it NOW, it appears to me that CodeGear is indeed aware of the
situation you describe.

But my guess, and my feeling, is that 64-bit is a more pressing and
genuine need in the Delphi development community than is reflected in
the apparent "demand".

That might very well be. I'm not claiming there's little or no demand
for Win64 support. I'm just trying to point out that the QC stats are
not well suited to judge that demand.

Currently CodeGear really are "where it's at" when it comes to native
code development tools for Windows. It's truly bizarre that they are
not exploiting this position to the absolute best of their ability (or
perhaps more distressing - to think that they are and that this IS their
best... but I'd prefer to think not)

While I agree that they're not in the ideal spot right now, I don't
agree that they're not doing the best they can. But that's just me :)
