Sorry about those problems.
I'm not sure why we ended up with Check for Updates only as a Start menu item instead of in the IDE. I'll check into that and if it can be added to the IDE menu for the next release.
I have to admit that I'm rather shocked that this is the first time the question has come up. I don't have a single other program (that I'm aware of) that has a SEPARATE 'check for updates' feature (other than MS products <G>). All other programs that I run have (either in help, or options, or online, or tools menus) an option to check for updates to the program. The only other exception I can think of are smaller shareware programs where you unload the update as an zip file and run the updater -- but you guys have intentionally set things up to be online updates, so I don't even BEGIN to understand the thinking behind not having the option on the menu. By the way, I've never once used the start menu to start the product - I put the icons on the desktop when initially installed, have always started from there. If you hadn't mentioned it was in the 'start menu' for the program, I probably STILL wouldn't be aware of it <G>.
Update 3 is an update for Delphi 2007 and C++Builder 2007 so it's listed on those registered users pages, not the Developer Studio 2006 registered users page. There are two download pages with different IDs, one for Delphi and one for C++Builder so they get correctly mapped to those two product lines in different places on our web sites and for some tracking purposes. The file is the same and when you download and run it, it brings up the installer with checkboxes for Delphi and C++Builder if you have them both installed.
I installed Delphi 2007 originally. I thought all I was installing was Delphi 2007. However, the installer also installed something called "CodeGear RAD Studio". When I installed my C++ Builder 2007 product, it also installed as something called "CodeGear RAD Studio". So, when I go to your webpage for downloads, and see a link for "CodeGear RAD Studio", what in the world do you expect me to click on???
The link doesn't say "BDS Studio 2006", it says, very clearly, "CodeGear RAD Studio"!!!
How in the world is the end user supposed to figure out what is in your minds when you keep changing things - I install the product under one name, but it installs under another name. When I go to download an update for the product, and click on the 'new' name that YOU have decided to call the product, it links to what you list as the PREVIOUS version of that SAME product.
My head hurts. It really does. I really, REALLY wish you guys were able to place yourselves in the shoes of the end users when you run your 'tests', and when you make these silly little decisions that you think have no consequence - because they end up making you folks look (at the least) incompetent. If the surface level things, such as downloading the product, or updates, or installation, have so many BLATANT issues, how in the world is there any confidence that the inner workings of the COMPLEX product will be solid?
The intermittent server busy error messages are a top priority for our IT team to resolve and they have been making progress on it. Now it's usually just a matter of having to click refresh for the page to come up instead of longer periods where it wouldn't work. Still annoying that it happens at all and we'll keep pushing to get it completely fixed.
I understand why the server is busy. I do. I simply think you should a) have a simple, separate ISO available for download, b) have multiple mirror sites, and c) allow others to distribute the image. The other aspect is that when a major development tools corporation has the message pop up with a debug screen telling the user that the server is busy, and giving a stack dump, and telling the user to contact the webmaster, it certainly gives one pause about using those tools to develop any web services...
