Not to start an OS war. but we seldom deploy any Enterprise level apps to Windows Servers. Indeed, it has been a very rare thing, when I have deployed any heavy server applications on Wintel servers.

It has always been a Unix/Mainframe world for Mission Critical applications. The only difference now is that many former Big Iron from firms like IBM and Sun are now running on x86/x64 boxes that are running Solaris 10 or Linux.

Windows boxes are used sometimes as file sharing, print servers, Web Servers, or some special Windows operation type boxes (integration with Windows desktops). Personally, I do not see this changing any time soon (unless the Windows file sharing and Print servers are replaced by Linux). However, the point is, that we have lived in a multi-platform world and more than likely will continue to do so, for a very long time. Even MS realizes this; hence MS' deals with Novell.

The real change is that Linux is now starting to take some desktop market for some specialty type apps. In addition, Linux is becoming increasingly important in the embedded space. Look at the cell phone OSes and other PDA type devices that are turning to Linux. As Desktop/Laptop and Cell/PDA integrations become more important, this may also increase Linux's desktop use.

Would an XPlatform Delphi be a good business move? I personally think so, but I have thought this since Delphi 3. So perhaps I am just biased :)

Linux is definitely going to become increasingly important in the Data Center. This trend has been occurring for at least the past 5 years. Many have speculated that this is coming only at the expense of Unix. I disagree. I have seen many Windows environments replaced with Linux servers. In fact, in North Georgia, many schools have totally replaced Windows servers with Linux. Not one Windows servers in 5 school districts, only Linux. Even I was surprised!
