Re: Spinoff: VMWare or VirtualBox

Since there is a thread about using VMs to develop Delphi apps. I have a
question, how does VirtualBox stack up against VMWare? Thanks.

I have been playing around with Virtual Box (on a Kubuntu 10/7 host) for a
few days, coming from a background of using VMware workstation (on both, a
Windows and Kubuntu host) for several years.

I found that installing Virtual Box is easier than that of VMware because
they provide packages for many Linux distributions. VMware in contrast did
not compile the necessary drivers until I applied the unofficial Any-Any
patch (search Google for it), which has been a nuisance for years. (I have
bought VMware workstation 6, so why don't I get some official support for
this issue? Yes, I am aware that Kubuntu 10/7 is not a supported host OS.)

I also liked the concept of managing harddisk images independently of
virtual machines, but only until I discovered that one cannot assign the
same image to multiple machines (I understand that in that case I could
only start one of these machines at the same time, but its not even allowed
to assign the image.). VMware allows me to do that, even though it
discourages it by creating virtual disks inside the folder that contains a
virtual machine.

Also, I found the way Virtual Box handles snapshots inferior to VMware.
VMware allows me to clone a virtual machine from the current state or from
any snapshot, also it allows me to easily switch between different
snapshots. I found no way to do that with Virtual Box. It allows me to
clone harddisk images only and that is not even part of the GUI but only
available through a commandline tool. And even that only clones the first
snapshot, not the current state (maybe I made a mistake here). Switching
between snapshots seems not to be possible at all.

On top of that, sharing the clipboard between VM and host only worked one
way (VM to host). According to the docs it should have been two way.

I have decided that I will stick with VMware workstation 6 for now,
