Indeed. ISTM that Kostya wanted (gratis) access to all previous
versions, once he bought D2007.
There is indeed a business need for some way to add license for older
versions.
Suppose a small group with a couple of developers maintaining a large
inventory of D7 apps. They're growing, and need to hire a new programmer.
So what do they do? Limit the new guy to only working on new stuff, and make
the existing folks handle all maintenance? Without any way of adding a D7
license, the new hire can't even help prepare the old apps for upgrade.
And while saying 'update everything to the current version' might be good
advice, realistically it simply can't happen overnight--there needs to be a
legal way of getting the new guy productive with the old code base by buying
something from CodeGear.
So solution would be to buy a current license (which serves CodeGear's
interest in getting the new product some exposure it might not otherwise
get), and include with the new license the ability to order a media kit for
the older version. Now the new guy can help with everything.
I'm aware that there are issues with version-retroactive licenses, but it is
a legitimate customer problem that needs some thought.
