I'm still seeing a lot of apps that use single user databases. Here's one
industry leading company (supports Windows only) that uses Access MDB files
with their suite of Visual Litigation apps.

Companies like this would want to use a platform independent data storage
system if they are to support other OSs. Single user desktop applications
was needed 15 years ago and is still needed today. Networked, web service,
multi-user applications just don't fit everyone's needs. Try taking a web
2.0 app into a courtroom setting for presentation during a trial. The
network is not your friend in that situation. Any network glitch can break
your application, and your goose is cooked!
See from this snippet on the Delphi roadmap that Tiburón will offer a -
"BDE replacement based on SQLDataStore with highly compatible TTable/TQuery
components...Can be used as a highly compatible replacement for BDE Paradox
applications.".
This looks like a solid desktop database solution in addition to broader
multi-user use. Delphi can get strong footholds onto other OSs, if CodeGear
wants to take them. Of course CodeGear would have to offer Delphi in some
form for those OSs to go along with a common database engine.

Not sure 'bout that.
The times of multiple users having file-based access to the same db file
is so 15 years ago...
