Re: Current Delphi status?

Hello!

I have been out of programming for maybe more than 5 years, and wonder how things have changed since D5. I see Kylix is no more, and .net is now an integral part of current products.

So are things that different since D5? Would apps have to be rewritten in order to support firebird instead of interbase? Have there been any major component changes concerning databases, internet and so on? Is there some .net-free Delphi version? Personally I never understood the fuss about .net, and still don't, as I see 90% of computers having no need for it. Actually I would be nervous to even install it on my computer, but maybe I am prejudiced :)

I also just visited Lazarus site after seeing it mentioned here. Not sure how much it can do, but still looks impressive for a 50MB download. Maybe Lazarus is to Delphi what IB/FB was to MS SQL and MySQL?

One of the most productive features of Delphi .net is ECO(grossly underplayed by CG).Though there is a learning curve ,it makes your software development truly iterative. No running to the DB designer even if one filed in a table has changed. The developer has the power & the capability in his/her own desktop.
As part of training two freshers for a company ,I developed a asp.net task manager application for the company. The design to implementation took less than two months & the application (documentation, test cases etc)is live with in the company intranet. Most of the work was done by the freshers & they could quickly grasp the nuances of modeling & ECO.The company was so enamored with ECO ,that for another upgrade to an existing win32 application , they have decided to go for a new ECO vcl.net application & call it from the Win32 application9rather than the Win32 way).
ECO would have become more popular if only the documentation was of the same standards as the product though lately that have started making amends. How ever the ECO newsgroup is a wonderful place to shoot your questions & get quick answers.
Though I don't know the exact reason the makers of ECO have separated out into a separate company called CapabaleObjects who are targeting the ECO for VS platform now.
I for one will never do any DB development with out ECO.By the way ECO supports FB very well.( i have tested it out)
