Is it? It is an often used format, I agree, since it provides nice
features. But is it really the standard format?
For alpha-transparency, the only practical storages are TGA (not supported natively by windows), 32bits BMP (savaged by many paint packages, not supported by browsers, and limited alpha support under windows) and... PNG.
Vista supports ICO and PNG for icons, and PNG is the preferred format (compressed, dynamically scaled rather than fixed sizes).
Since IE finally supports PNG properly with IE7 and is being force-fed via Windows Update, GIF can be put to rest (all other browsers have been supporting it for a long time).
