"overpriced and out of reach" is pretty much the way I see itIf a professional developer cannot afford that, he's doing something
wrong.
How soon people lose touch.
When I started my business I was broke. If it wasnt for a $49 copy of turbo
pascal, who knows, I might be an accountant now. $400 for a development
tool? That simply would never have happened. I know a lot of people dont
have to start off there, but a lot of people do.
Where do those broke but ambitious kids go nowadays? Java, PHP, and MS's
free C# tools. Why? Because $400 is simply not going to happen for those
kids. That also includes the dabblers and hobbyists who might come up with
a great idea, and turn it into a business (which in turn, turns into quite a
few Delphi licenses). Some of them might pay $400 for a copy of Delphi...
but most will just take the course of least resistence and go with one of
the free or dirt cheap alternatives at first.
Just like a political campaign, a business needs to cultivate its
grassroots. Borland mowed theirs.
