When we were considering our options, one of the big draws was the "independence". Having Kylix was important in our decision process, even though we had on immediate plans to deploy apps with it. I've still got a box under my desk.

+1. I've mentioned several times here in the past how I've also witnessed that same process. Basically, even if a developer isnt doing non-windows development, having the option to be able to do so at some point in the future is worth an awful lot. Its insurance that all your effort wont go to waste if the platform changes. The story I usually recount is how a software company (of substantial size) I once worked for ended up choosing java as its main tool because of its cross platform nature... even though still, after 10 years, they've never actually made non-windows versions of their apps. I pitched Delphi, and they liked it, and even agreed it'd save them a lot of time. But windows-only was a no-go.

I'd like to see codegear create cross compilers and then design (not necessarily implement) a cross platform vcl. Appoint one of their people to oversee it, and then open the sucker up for the community to fill in the holes. The vcl 'guru' can guide the development so that the specs are correctly met and monitor quality.

That already exist with Free Pascal (FP). CG won't partner with them. Why do the compilers have to come from CG. Do you want / need native IDE, or just remote debugging from your windows box? Just like there was a Cross Compiler for Kylix plugin, they should be doing the same for FP Linux 32/64, Mac, Sun 32/64.
