IMO the biggest problem with web development is:
1. compiler - people don't like the compilation step
2. cross platform - Exe doesn't run on linux hosting
3. existing software - php started years ago and has head start
Yes, and it's also the cgi interface IMO.

I think pascal on the web is like how google who uses odd languages like SawZall and C++ for their website mostly. I use modern pascal as a niche tool for the web development and don't care about mass popularity... but some popularity is important and the website devel crowd for modern pascal is extremely tiny.
Popularity is important for a few reasons:
1) ability to hire developers to use the technology
2) the more people that bang on the tech, the more bugs/edge cases will be found and the more solid it will be
3) the more resources one will have to learn and use the technology (books, articles, examples, third party/api integration)
None of those are guaranteed, however those are real factors that "in the trenches" programmers might dismiss, but if they would take a step back and think a little bit like a manager or even think about managing their own career, then I believe those are real concerns.
One problem, is they just don't "get it". Like the whole "let's turn delphi IDE into a website designer" just doesn't work if you don't have a huge api underneath it first.. as php3 did.
I agree completely. There's a cultural issue within the Delphi community in regards to most things beyond Win32 Client/Server GUIs.
