I may be suffering from an irony overload here - I thought a big USP of the Microsoft Installer (and the reason why MSIs were so big and so slow) was that by including lots of redundant data and code it could handle and repair such failed and/or corrupted installations.

That's the trouble with a supposedly fail-safe system - whenever it fails, it fails to fail-safe. :)
