I'd recommend something like RemObjects for the remoting. You could
optionally use Data Abstract over RemObjects, which would allow you more
flexibility in changing back-end DBs for different customers. However, I
agree with Alessandro that it'd probably be best to go with MSSQL. It's
a great DB, one of your clients already requires it, and there are free
versions.
