In months to come your customers will find it increasingly difficult to buy new machines with XP pre-installed.

Not really. Well if they purchase computers from Dell, BestBuy, etc, I'm sure you're 100% correct. The PC Cartels will continue to push Vista.

It isn't a question of PC Cartels continuing to push Vista, it's Microsoft's XP licensing policy that presents the problem.

Most consumer PC are a bad fit for (restaurant) Point of Sale applications. The environment is just too harsh for them.

There are many POS specific suppliers that build your PC's to order (which we use). Here an example:

Have these POS specific suppliers assured you that they will be able to furnish machines with licensed copies of XP after January 31, 2009? See the reference to "System Builders" at the end of the "Future of Windows XP" section in this letter from Bill Veghte, senior vice president of the Online Services & Windows Business group.

Well that certainly sucks. What a waste. To have to run a fat, bloated OS like Vista for a simple task based workstation like POS terminals is a waste.

I've been careful to write all the business objects for our newest (re-written) version of the software so that they are as compatible as possible with Lazarus/Freepascal and Delphi. I've already written the new back office portion in Delphi 2007 where I need a good reporting tool like FastReports and the fact that most users will have a Windows box for the back office. For the POS side, I've written a concept GUI in Delphi 2007 as well, but whether I'll actually flesh it out as a releasable product remains to be seen.
