No doubt! The thing that bites me is what I eluded to above. Namely, there are a lot of task based applications out there like Point of Sale applications that don't need any of the bloat that Vista comes with. Its the only application running on the computer for pete's sake.
So, to run a simple POS application (kiosk, app, etc), one needs to shell out for minimum 2 (probably best off with 3) GIG of RAM /and/ a decent graphics card just so Vista can sit there like a fat bloated decadent gorged tick and allow you to run a simple application.
Keeping in mind what Vista does is load as much of itself into ram as possible to keep the OS running quickly. If an app needs memory, Vista unloads parts of itself and frees up that ram. Having 'free' ram is not actually a useful thing on a system really, free ram is unused ram :) I have a machine with 4Gb, and with a few apps loaded, it shows 0Mb Free... yet when I go to use something, start another app etc, everything is nice and quick as it reshuffles itself.
I do agree that Vista could be overkill for simple POS applications. However also be mindful that if you switch Aero off, you will get a good performance boost and a bit of memory reduction too.
A client of mine runs Vista Basic on a 1Gb notebook (just a basic machine, dual core, but otherwise minimal), and it's more than fine for running their custom POS/appointment application that I wrote. That said, with memory prices these days, throwing in 2Gb into one of these low end machines is a good idea.
Cheers,
Dave
