OK, back to the original question - how do you connect a SAN to a
computer? There are currently two methods - FibreChannel or iSCSI.

So it's basically a network card with special drivers that make the server
think it's a storage device?

Seems like there's potential for a roll your own SAN. Write a driver to fake
a storage device, and pump it out TCP/IP to a file server using whatever
protocol you like.
