Well, independent of whether one does "serious" research or not, I would not
use someone's software if it didn't come with source code. Who can guarantee
me that the person will still be doing research in a year's time?

Also, you mention that you don't provide the source code so you don't have
to support your software? I must confess that I don't see the logic... It's
rather if I were not to release my source code that I would have to support
my software... By releasing his/her source code, one can do whatever s/he
wants...

To release the source code also allows others to report bugs in the code,
should there be some. While, if the source code is not released, what
happens if, for instance, I find a bug in your software? I am stuck, right?
