This is correct. Most receipt printers have software which will allow
you to download several bitmaps to the EEPROM of the printer. You can
then use the standard ESC/POS command GS + '/' + n where n is the
bitmap number you wish to print. The Citizen CBM-1000 printers have a
similar facility, but the command on that (even under ESC/POS emulation
bizarrely) is FS + 'p' + n

FWIW, I never print using the Windows print driver - I've found it to
be too flaky. Directly sending the text to the printer (either serial
or ethernet) is the fastest and most efficient way of printing.
